Babies benefit from regular monitoring in the neonatal period. International recommendations advise that babies are reviewed at birth, 2 weeks and 6 weeks. This is to ensure that any problems with the heart eyes and liver are diagnosed early.

NEWBORN HEARING SCREENING:

We can screen for congenital nerve deafness using the Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) test. If a hearing deficit is diagnosed early, children can commence immediate treatment programme. This test is performed routinely on all newborns in the UK. There is currently no screening service available in any Irish maternity hospital.

This is a painless non invasive test, using a small handheld device. We can test for nerve hearing loss within a few minutes. This test is best performed in the first few weeks of life. It is one of the tests we will perform when you attend for the 2 week check, & if not passed we will ask you to re-attend weekly (at no additional charge).
